Apple iPad in Healthcare: Pros and Cons « ScienceRoll

Do you ever feel like you know just enough about ipad apple to be dangerous? Let's see if we can fill in some of the gaps with the latest info from ipad apple experts.

Im not really an Apple fan, but Im always open to innovations in healthcare. Last week was centered around iPad both in the news and the blogosphere as more and more bloggers started to describe its potential role in healthcare. Its obvious now that healthcare will go through some major changes in the next few years due to EMRs (electronic medical records) and PHRs (personal health records). Though Boston has already gone through this.

Tablet solutions have a clear future (pdf) but as Apple tablet representatives were spotted at Los Angeles Cedars-Sinai Medical Center a few weeks ago, it seems iPad might have a shot in healthcare as well. Lets see what can happen.

You can see that there's practical value in learning more about ipad apple. Can you think of ways to apply what's been covered so far?

Possible cons from the healthcare aspect:

  • No camera: it means it cannot be used in telemedicine
  • No flash: several medical websites use Flash
  • No mouse support: its not a disadvantage if there wont be click-heavy applications
  • Battery life: It is somewhere around 10 hours which is enough for a doctor working on the hospital but what happens when the iPad gets handed off to the next person? Dying battery can be swapped out for a fresh one in other tablet solutions. Here there wont be enough time to re-charge iPads.
  • Its too big to fit into a doctors pocket.
  • iPad is not ruggedized while other healthcare tablets are drop resistant from about a meter.
  • No Multi-tasking: it makes it impossible to write a patient report while consulting with a collegue (there are hundreds of examples why multi-tasking is crucial)
  • No barcode scanner: its used for checking and uploading drugs, among others.
  • Such a device should be water-proof and easily disinfected. iPad wasnt designed for this.
  • The iPad has a capacitive touch screen on which gloves wont work.
Possible pros:

  • If there is a company that can get the best out of such a device, that is Apple.
  • Probably there will be more and more medical applications designed exclusively for iPad just like there are so many medical apps for iPhone.
  • Its cheaper than other healthcare tablets.
  • It was designed to be as user-friendly as possible (a nice advantage of Apple products) so elderly people will also be able to learn to use it easily.
  • One scenario might be having an iPad in the hospital as the central database where doctors can upload the information from the iPhones.
If I miss anything, please let me know so I can improve the list.

I think iPad has the potential to become the No.1 healthcare tablet, but it has to go through plenty of changes and innovations in order to become a serious competitor in this race.

Life after Windows: What happens to tech if Microsoft dies

The following paragraphs summarize the work of tech experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of tech. Heed their advice to avoid any tech surprises.

Free from the Microsoft hegemony, user and developer utopia should ensue, some argue -- but here's why apocalypse is more likely

It's the thought experiment we all like to engage in. What would life be like without Microsoft Windows? To listen to the free open source software crowd, the demise of Windows -- and by extension, Microsoft's hegemony over the PC universe -- would signal a kind of rebirth for information technology. Software would finally be free of the corporate shackles that have stifled innovation and dragged down the best and brightest among us.

Such thinking is naïve, at best. Rather than freeing IT, the demise of Microsoft would plunge the industry into an apocalyptic tailspin of biblical proportions -- no visions of hippie utopia here. The withdrawal of the Redmond giant's steady hand would cause today's computing landscape to tear itself apart at the seams, with application and device compatibility and interoperability devolving into the kind of Wild West chaos unseen since the days of the DOS big three: Lotus, WordPerfect, and Ashton-Tate.

[ InfoWorld envisions five possible futures for Microsoft. Which do you think is most on target? | Get the analysis and insights that only Randall C. Kennedy can provide on PC tech in InfoWorld's Enterprise Desktop blog. ]

And don't believe that the Web will somehow mitigate the impact of Windows' demise. Although Google talks a good story about supplanting traditional compute models with a Web-centric paradigm, the truth is that the folks from Mountain View are no less sinister when it comes to grandiose plans for world domination. If anything, the rise of Google -- or any dominant cloud-computing player -- should be perceived as a potential threat to IT independence. As the saying goes, never put all your IT eggs into a single vendor's basket.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I'm sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.

But come, let us ponder together the implications of a world without that shiny, four-colored Windows logo. A world where standards are fleeting and where creativity and innovation have run amok. A post-apocalyptic vision worthy of the full Roland Emmerich disaster porn treatment. Here, in the spirit of the History Channel's "Life after People" series, I present my vision of life after Windows.

Client applications: Kiss consistency good-bye
The client application landscape will be almost unrecognizable in a post-Microsoft world. The deprecation of the legacy Windows API, coupled with the move to an entirely Web-based delivery model, will open the floodgates of innovation -- and create massive headaches for support personnel, who must now contend with the rich variety of UI designs and implementations that define the Web application experience.

Basically, you can kiss consistency good-bye. With developers free to create their own interface primitives, many arbitrary decisions will worm their way into the larger UI consciousness. Steps to complete even basic tasks -- for example, manipulating and formatting lists of data -- will vary widely among implementations. And while common Web metaphors (hyperlinks, form fields) will continue to function as expected, more exotic constructs -- like the Webified version of a tools palette -- will take on increasingly diverse modes of interaction. You'll still click on things (or, more likely, touch them on screen with a finger or stylus), but the resulting actions will be anything but predictable.

Cross-application integration will be another sore spot. With OLE/COM/VBA out of the picture, the job of linking data between disparate applications will fall to a mixture of JavaScript and various cloud-hosted APIs and resources. In some cases -- most notably, suites of applications from a single vendor -- this integration will occur seamlessly on the back end. However, without a robust, widely adopted standard for data exchange, such integration will be difficult to achieve between the various vendor-specific silos that will make up the future cloud computing fabric.

Lenovo IdeaCentre C300

With a beautiful design and complete facilities, Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 is an ideal representation of a PC AiO. Not long ago, the vendor re-release of his newest family IdeaCentre labeled C300. Can be traced from its name if this product is set as a downgraded version of the A600. However, the design aspect remains a mainstay of Lenovo. This time they gave perwajahan attraction with classical motifs frame.

Class distinctions with the "brother" immediately apparent when we looked in the hardware specifications. To suppress the price, Lenovo uses Intel's Atom processor. But instead of using a type of N270 or N280 is actually intended for the netbook, C300 carrying a targeted N330 Intel for nettop. Naturally, if the performance was quite rushed C300 compared to other PC. Especially if you just used for standard computing activities.

Shown with 20-inch screen, C300 is well suited to satisfy the users of the multimedia side. The availability of an internal DVD drive into an advantage compared to C300 class competitors who generally only provide an external optical device.

But when tested, the ability to play HD video files, not as smooth as the way of hope. In some sections, the resulting picture somewhat broken. It does not matter if the play is a standard multimedia files such as AVI, WMV, and MP4.

Intrigued with its 3D performance, we played the game Doom 3 with the C300. The result? It turned out pretty good. Much more smoothly than when playing HD video.

Windows Mobile 7 will be launched in February 2010

Microsoft Corp. plans to unveil a new operating system for mobile phones next month. The Company may use the celebration Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to show a new software called Windows Mobile 7. "However, this decision was not final," said the anonymous source who knows the problem.

Microsoft relies on the latest software to bring back the spirit of the consumer Windows Mobile and mobile phone manufacturers who have adopted this system. Understandably, according to Matt Rosoff, an analyst with Kirkland, Windows Mobile 6.5, which came out in October, not enough to satisfy the software developer.

As a result, the faster they are showing Windows Mobile 7, the better, "he said. Conversely, the longer the delay the launch of Microsoft's operating system, may be, the less consumers Microsoft for handset makers will glance at other options.

Unfortunately, Debbie Anderson, a spokesman for Redmond, Microsoft's base in Washington, did not want to say this launch time. "There are no new thing to be announced," he said. Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp.. years ago said that the new program will come out in 2010.

Motorola Nexus Two

Forget the sales failure Nexus One, that some observers regarded as a direct selling system that Google is very wrong. Therefore, a rumor says the latest generation is called Nexus Two middle blows hard.

HTC is not coupled to a Nexus Two of this, but Motorola has been horrendous with the previous rumors about the presence of Shadow Motorola. Yes, the owner of the logo 'bat wings' it was preparing a successor to the headset as the phone Nexus.

Launched by GSM Arena, Monday (18/1/2010), from the photos showed a limited spread among Nexus Two if this design adopts a qwerty keyboard on the sliding-out, but the screen still using touchscreen technology. At first glance, is similar to the picture Shadow Motorola leaked and spread on the internet.

Keep in mind, the Shadow has a 4.3 inch screen size with screen resolution up to 850x484 pixels or 854x480 pixels. Other additional cell is HDMI port, and the camera with the power and has 8-megapixel 1080p video capture capabilities. This includes the processor Qualcomm MSM 7200A 528 MHz.

The other is still a mystery is the operating system installed on the Nexus Two. In previous generations, the Google Phone has been pinned on the latest generation of Android, the Android 2.1. It may be that Android 2.1 will be a partner in Nexus Two, or even have to use Android OS more recently with the code name, Froyo.

The failure to sell off the system also becomes a serious concern, whether between Google and Nokia will implement a similar system. Or do they go back to the old system. Moreover, until now, the new Nexus One sold 20 thousand units in the first week since it was first introduced.

Silicon Power Armor A50

Portable hard disks we find more plural. From one brand alone, the model can be varied. Data storage that can be carried mengemaskan usually USB 2.0 connection, but there have been several recent connections serving: USB 3.0.

Among those still using USB 2.0 is the Silicon Power A50. If judging specifications, A50 is identical to his brother that we've tested, A10. You're welcome to use hard drive 2.5 "5400rpm spinning. Later we will see if its performance is the same.

But there may be no difference right? Well, compared to his brother, A10, portable hard drive A50 Silicon Power Armor looks much thinner and far more elegant. Body wrapped in aluminum, silver on the top panel and black on the sides and bottom. Ehhh not have that rag! This is not a netbook that his case diligently collecting fingerprint impressions anyone who held it. In this portable hard drive, we will not find fingerprints on the surface of the body.

Well, before seeing the performance of this portable hard drive, let's see the package contents Silicon Power Armor is A50.

USB cable and CD
In the package, we will get a USB cable to connect A50 branched into computer USB 2.0 ports. On the new computer, just plug one end of the USB (select the thick cord) to the USB 2.0 ports.

But if your computer is old enough, or you use a USB extension cable (for USB 2.0 port of your computer at the back of the casing which happened to lie under the table), you may need to plug both ends of the USB cable into your computer's USB port. Spending a computer port it? But this is absolutely so terpasok adequate resources so that a portable hard drive can be recognized by the computer.

BenQ Joybook S35 with Windows 7

Physically, the BenQ Joybook S35 is like a big version of the netbook BenQ, Joybook S101. This can be seen from the use of glossy piano blue with BenQ Joybook writing on the back. The use of such glossy material makes this notebook look modern look, though should be compensated with fingerprints easily attached to this surface.

As a notebook, physical Joybook S35 looks a little wider. Thick notebook itself ranges from 1.3 cm at the numbers (on the front side) up to 2.9 cm (on the back). So is thick, this notebook had not reached the number "sacred" 1 inch. However, calculations were honestly can not release the image as the Joybook S35 notebook thin, as he briefly looked very slim. Moreover, weighed only 1.6 kg.

BenQ S35 All facilities developed on the left and right, including the memory slot, VGA-Out, USB (3 pieces), HDMI, and eSATA. This last facility is underlined because it is not feasible in other thin notebooks. But such a thin notebook generally, there is no optical devices or PCMCIA expansion slot / Express Card. This notebook also has Bluetooth.

On the interior, BenQ does not do a lot of reforms. Keyboard keys are practically the same as BenQ notebooks in general, do not follow the style that is trendy chiclet it. But like the touchpad InfoKomputer made it so textured feel responsive.

Like other thin notebooks, notebook sailed 13.3 "using an Intel Core 2 Solo SU 3500 and the Mobile Intel GS45 chipset. Large memory capacity (4GB), but relatively small hard drive capacity (250GB) when compared to Asus and Acer. Joybook S35 test results appear to compete with Asus UX30 as the best, but it should be noted that this notebook uses Windows 7 that did not fit when compared to the apple-to-apple.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) 3D printer

King of printers Hewlett-Packard (HP) is looking a new horizon. The goal is a 3D printer.

Partnership to achieve any 3D printer was raised by Stratasys. As planned, Stratasys will make 3D printers will be released by HP in this year. Printer is not designed for everyday use ordinary user, but for the needs of architecture and prototype components.

This printer will certainly not cheap, could be in the range of U.S. $ 20,000, but according to market HP is ready to accept such machines. Actually, this 3D printer on the table fester long enough image.

This is also not the kind of printer you can use to print photos / posters from Avatar or Jaws 3D, but to form a 3D model of layer-by-layer using ABS plastic. ABS plastic is the type most thermoplastics used in injection-molded products today. 3D printer allows users to evaluate and test the functionality, form and precision of the model are made.
